Here in the northern Lake District we are lucky to have the only breeding pair of Canadian Lynx in the UK.
Odin, named after the Norse god of wisdom and war, was born in Southport Zoo, 1999. His mate Freya was born in Ostrav Zoo in 2007 and flew in from the Czech Republic in 2008 and the pair had their first cubs in 2009. Freya had her first litter of three kittens in 2009 and one of the females called Lexi is still here with her Mum. She weighted 200g when born and was featured on Michaela Strachens TV programme Animal Road Trip.
Canadian Lynx feed almost exclusively on the snow hare and the entire Lynx population isdependant on the number of hare available. The lynx’s big rounded paws can carry twice their weight and work as snowshoes which help them in their natural habitat.
Please note we no longer have any Lynx species at Trotters World of Animals. Odin sadly passed away in 2011 and the remaining females have moved to Le Parc Des Felins in France.
