Prionailurus viverrinus

The Fishing Cat is from the south east of Asia and they live in wetland or mangrove swamps.

They are the best swimmers of all cats and are known for diving under the water and catching fish. They will also sit by rivers and lakes, gently tapping the water to attract fish and then grabbing them!Fishing cats are VERY FEROCIOUS and brave little cats that can easily bring down prey much larger then themselves – like calves, but they mainly feed on small mammals, birds, fish and frogs.

Nestled in our Lakeland Wildlife park, our breeding pair are Dad Sangke and Mum Pong . They have had a litter of three kittens in the past and when they do have little ones it’s important that Dad is kept separate – just incase he decided to eat them!!

Kali, named after the fierce Hindu mother goddess, is a very cheeky and stubborn little cat – she’s got her own mind and enjoys a good play fight. Kali’s favourite foods include rabbit, fish and Keepers boots!

They are nocturnal by nature and have well camouflaged coats – rather like their closest relative the Leopard. If you come to the park you should be patient – it can take a few minutes to find them lurking in the grassland and trees.
