Lynx canadensis
Trotters World of Animals is proud to have the only pair of breeding Canadian Lynx in the UK.
Odin, named after the Norse god of wisdom and war, was born in Southport Zoo, 1999. His mate Freya was born in Ostrav Zoo in 2007 and flew in from the Czech Republic in 2008 and the pair had their first cubs in 2009. Freya has raised one litter so far, with three cute cubs weighing around 200g at birth.
The Canadian Lynx is distinctive in appearance – with its triangular shaped, tufted ears, thick set body, long hind legs, a short, stumpy tail that looks as though it was dipped in an inkwell and large fur covered paws which help carry the cat over deep snow. The coat is spotted, and can be masked by the thick tawny to grey coloured fur, which has white tips.
The Canada Lynx is a secretive cat weighing around 11 kg and 90 cm in length and a shoulder height of 60 cm. The Snow Shoe Hares are the main diet, and the population of the Lynx is largely dependent on population of this Hare.
Matt – Carnivore Keeper
Please note we no longer have any Lynx species at Trotters World of Animals. Odin sadly passed away in 2011 and the remaining females have moved to Le Parc Des Felins in France.
